Heart Healthy Tips & Trails

Heart Healthy Tips & Trails

February is American Heart Month. This is the perfect time of year to slow down and focus on our health. According to the CDC, heart disease is the leading cause of death in the United States. There’s a multitude of lifestyle choices that can dramatically impact our heart health. Read along for our heart healthy tips & trails to keep your heart strong.

Heart Healthy Tips

1. Get Moving

a. Whether it means dancing, cleaning the house, or hiking one of Austin’s many trails (see below), physical exercise is necessary for a healthy heart. Exercise strengthens the heart, reduces stress, and helps control weight.

2. Make Mindful Food Choices

a. Life is about balance, so be sure to find a healthy balance in the foods you fuel your body with. Whether this means cutting back on red meat or adding more fruits and vegetables to meals, there are small changes to your diet that can establish heart-healthy nutrition habits.

3. Manage Your Stress

a. Chronic stress can lead to high blood pressure, so make sure you are finding effective ways to keep your stress at bay.

4. Quit Smoking

a. Smoking is a major contributor to cardiovascular disease. While it isn’t easy, consider quitting to improve your long-term health.
