The word is in expert trend forecasters at Pantone have elected Viva Magenta 18-750 as the 2023 color of the year. Dive into what Viva Magenta will mean for design trends and the history of the color of the year.
How Does Pantone Choose a Color of the Year?
Since 2000, color experts at Pantone have been searching the world to analyze how color permeates through our culture. After collecting information, a decision is to be made. Per Pantone’s website, “Twice a year Pantone hosts, in a European capital, a secret meeting of representatives from various nations' color standards groups. After two days of presentations and debate, they choose a color for the following year.”
Why Viva Magenta 18-750?
Described by Pantone as a “nuanced crimson red tone that presents a balance between warm and cool,” Viva Magenta represents society’s trend towards more natural colors. The selection process saw a “heightened appreciation and awareness of nature,” which inspired the choice.
The color itself can be organically derived from the cochineal beetle, which produces carmine dye–the brightest natural dye.
The boldness of the color ties together natural influences and strength to encompass the current position of our world. Pantone notes that its color psychology “cloaks us in both power and grace and sends us out into the world with the verve we’ve yearned for.”
