The Sun Sets on Summer: How to Close Up Your Vacation Home

The Sun Sets on Summer: How to Close Up Your Vacation Home

Labor Day is bittersweet for those who own a summer home, as it commonly marks the end of vacation season and the need to close up your retreat for the fall and winter months. If you’re getting ready to close up your summer home before fall starts, don’t forget to take the following measures so you can keep your property safe and sound until spring has sprung.

Inspect Your Property Inside and Out.

Walk the perimeter of your property and take note of any damages before you close up your summer home. Make a list of anything you find that needs to be fixed and determine if it should be taken care of before you close up or when you return in the spring.

Turn Off Your Water.

To avoid pipes freezing in the cold winter months, be sure to turn your water off before saying goodbye to summer. Even if you keep your home heated in the winter, there’s always a chance the heater could break, and your home temperatures can drop low enough to cause freezing.

Unplug Your Electronics.

Save your electronics and appliances from power surges and lightning strikes by unplugging them before you head out.

Store Outdoor Furniture Inside.

Don’t risk your collection of outdoor furniture being ruined—or worse yet, blowing away—during hurricane season. Store it safely inside your home or boathouse if you have room.

Take Your Valuable Items With You.

Even if you have a home security system installed, taking valuable items with you can prevent theft and save you thousands.

Draw the Blinds.

Protect furniture, carpeting, and art (while preventing any potential thefts) by drawing the blinds before you leave.

Designate an Emergency Contact.

If an emergency happens while you’re away, having a neighbor who’s willing to jump in and help out is ideal.

Spending a little extra time before closing up your summer home can prevent a multitude of sticky situations from arising while you’re away for the winter months.
