Austin is full of fun places to visit and explore, but sometimes you just get that itch to travel. We’ve put together a list of our top five favorite day trips, all just a short drive away from downtown Austin.
Enchanted Rock State Park
Roughly two hours from downtown Austin in Llano, Texas, this pink granite mountain is an extremely popular hiking, camping, and stargazing spot. Take in the amazing views from the top (roughly 450 feet above sea level) and enjoy some of the best skyline views the Hill Country has to offer.
Pedernales State Park
Located about an hour east of Enchanted Rock is Pedernales Falls State Park. This park is a hiker’s dream, with its plethora of trails leading to cascading waterfalls. On dry days, you can even take adventures into the riverbed and see a different side of the park.
San Antonio + The Riverwalk
Our sister city to the south is the perfect day trip. Only an hour and a half away – traffic willing – a quick ride to the San Antonio riverwalk gives you access to amazing food, shops, museums, and a treasure trove of Texas history. Remember (to visit) The Alamo!
Mckinney Falls State Park
This is our closest “day trip” being only 20 minutes from downtown. Mckinney Falls is a perfect outdoor getaway from the hustle and bustle of the city. With over 700 acres of land, it’s got hiking trails and swimming spots galore.
Hamilton Pools Reserve
One of the Hill Country’s hidden gems. A glistening oasis tucked away into the hillside, Hamilton Pools is a short hike to a natural spring with its own waterfall and freshwater pool.
