It’s the end of summer and that means the back-to-school season is upon us. For many this is a time of reflection, hope, and just a bit of stress. Between shopping, prepping for studies, finishing up summer homework, or just establishing a routine, the month can get incredibly busy. We’ve compiled some quick tips to help set you and your kiddos up for success in their education journey.
- Finding Motivation - It doesn't matter if you know all the correct ways and strategies to study if your child does not have motivation. What that specific motivation is does not matter, but you need to find something that gets your child fired up. For some it’s being the smartest kid in class, for others it’s learning about a specific subject. Wherever you find your child’s motivation, always be reminding yourself of it.
- Proper Learning Habits - We’ll give you an example of two children. One kid always spent a lot of time studying. Hours upon hours went into studying, yet he never did that well in class. He managed to squeak out with B's and C's. Another child studied well, but didn’t dedicate as many hours to it. He had a high gpa and always tested well. The difference between the two kids, despite their similarity in intelligence, is the way they went about learning. One child sat and focused on memorizing material to prepare for the next quiz or test. The other child had their book and notes out, and was always writing things down. One was memorizing while the other was learning. You need to be able to teach the material to someone else, not just commit random facts to short-term memory.
- Learning Time Management - You know time management is crucial, both as a parent and a student. If you consistently work to stay ahead you won’t feel as overwhelmed. Setting up a proper schedule can help alleviate future stress.
- Focus on the fun - The craziness we and our children are dealing with in the world makes it easy to forget to take a moment to breathe. Small moments between chores, homework, and your daily routine to rest and have fun are incredibly important. This will allow creativity to really flow and it will help mitigate unnecessary stress throughout your (and your childs) day.
- Organize your morning routine - Another key to setting yourself and your child up for back-to-school success is to make sure all your tasks in the morning are as smooth as possible. Having everything set to a tight schedule you can follow every day will help put everyone involved into the proper mind space for school, work, and anything else the day could throw at you.
We hope we provided some help in this busy time. Moreland wishes every parent, student, and teacher the best of luck this school year.
