While decorating for the holidays is cheerful at first, the thought of taking it all down after the season is over can quickly become overwhelming. To help make the process easier this year, we’ve put together a few tried-and-true methods of storing and organizing your decor.

Use clear Ziplock bags for non-breakable ornaments. Group ornaments by color and place them in clear baggies for easy organization within a larger Rubbermaid.

Cover your tree in seran wrap. If you store your tree in a garage or storage unit, you’ll want it to be compact and kept clean year long. Wrapping it loosely in cling wrap does just the trick!

Wrap your Christmas lights around cardboard pieces. Reuse packaging from gifts by cutting boxes down into smaller rectangles and wrapping light strands around them. That way, you can place multiple strands in the same storage container without them getting tangled.
Keep tree trimmings in water bottles. Keep garland from getting twisted in storage by using empty water bottles to keep it in one place. Each water bottle will hold two strings of beaded garland!
Save miscellaneous storage containers from around your house. An egg carton, shoe box, or even paper towel roll can make for the easiest storage solution. Smaller ornaments can be placed in egg cartons, while wine cartons with dividers can make it easy to layer tissue paper and ornaments on top of one another.
Use sheets to store your artificial tree. Take spare bed sheets and tie them around the top, middle, and bottom of your artificial tree to keep branches from getting flat while in storage. It makes it so much easier to transport as well without branches shedding all over your home!
Create makeshift ornament storage with red solo cups. Use leftover plastic cups from your holiday parties and hot glue them to cardboard pieces that will fit in your Rubbermaid bins. You can easily store one or two ornaments per cup, and add another makeshift “shelf” on top without crushing a thing.
